If I had a dollar for every time someone sat down in my chair and said, "I think I need Botox... or maybe filler? Honestly, I'm not sure what the difference is," I could probably retire to a beach somewhere. And it's a great question! Botox and filler are both injectables, both done in about the time of a lunch break, and both help you look refreshed. But they work in completely different ways.
Here's a simple guide to the difference, so you can walk into your consultation at Skin Affaire MedSpa in Excelsior Springs (serving Liberty, Kearney and the Northland) feeling confident about what you're asking for.
The Short Answer
Botox relaxes
It softens lines caused by muscle movement, like frown lines and crow's feet.
Filler restores
It adds volume where you've lost it, or where you'd like a little more, like the lips, cheeks and smile lines.
Think of it this way: if a line shows up when you make an expression, Botox is usually the answer. If a line or hollow is there even when your face is at rest, filler is often the better fit. Plenty of women benefit from both.
How Botox Works

Botox, along with its cousins Dysport, Xeomin and Daxxify, is a neurotoxin. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it works by blocking nerve signals to the muscle where it's injected, so that muscle can't tense up as much. When the muscle relaxes, the skin over it smooths out.
That makes Botox ideal for "expression lines," including:
- The "11s" between your brows
- Forehead lines
- Crow's feet around the eyes
- Bunny lines on the nose
- A lip flip for a fuller-looking upper lip
- Jawline slimming (masseter) and neck bands
The Cleveland Clinic notes that most people start to notice a difference around day three or four, with full results within 10 to 14 days. Results last about three to four months on average, which is why most of our clients come back on that schedule.
Our most popular Botox treatment is the "Look of Three," which treats frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet together for a smooth, natural look. You can see all the areas we treat on our Botox & Neurotoxins page.

How Filler Works

Dermal fillers are gel injections placed under the skin to restore volume, smooth deeper lines and add shape. At Skin Affaire, we use the Restylane family of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your skin already makes, and it holds onto moisture, which gives skin that plump, hydrated look.
Filler is a great fit for:
- Lips: shape, balance and hydration
- Smile lines (nasolabial folds) and accordion lines
- Cheeks and chin
- Jawline contouring and full-face balancing
You'll see results right away, and they keep improving over about two to three weeks as any swelling settles. Lip filler fully settles in about two weeks.
The Cleveland Clinic says HA filler results usually last six months to a year. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that some newer products can last up to two years, while filler in areas that move a lot, like the lips, tends to break down faster. Learn more on our filler page.

Can You Get Botox and Filler Together?
Absolutely, and it's one of the most common combinations we do. Because Botox and filler work in different ways, they complement each other. Botox softens the lines from movement, and filler restores the volume that naturally fades with time. Many clients do both at the same visit.
One of my favorite combos? A little Botox for the 11s plus a touch of lip filler. It's subtle, it's fresh, and people tend to say "you look rested" rather than "what did you get done?" That's exactly the kind of result we love.
Which One Is Right for You?
Ask yourself a few questions before your visit:
- Do your lines show up mostly when you smile, squint or frown? Botox is likely your starting point.
- Do you notice thinning lips, flatter cheeks or deeper smile lines, even when you're not making an expression? Filler may be a better fit.
- Are you seeing a bit of both? A combination plan might give you the most natural result.
You don't have to figure it out alone. Every treatment at Skin Affaire starts with a consultation with our physician-supervised team, where we look at your face, talk about your goals and recommend only what makes sense for you.
Bring a photo of yourself from five or ten years ago that you love. It helps me see what's changed, and it's often the fastest way to tell whether you'll get more from Botox, filler or a little of each.
What Does It Cost?
We keep pricing simple and transparent.
Pricing for Botox and Daxxify is on our pricing page. We also offer payment plans, and if you'd like to make it a girls' night, ask about hosting a tox party.
Planning Around the Holidays?
With Thanksgiving and holiday parties coming up, timing matters. Botox takes about two weeks to reach full results, and filler can have a little swelling for the first several days. Check out our Holiday Glow-Up Timeline to see when to book so you look your best in every photo.
